Claude Monet and Impressionism
-
Impressionism was an ‘Art Movement’ that started developing in the early 1860’s. An art movement is a new type of art with a specific goal with many artist contributors helping achieve the goal. Impressionism can be considered as the first modern movement in the art world. It started because of artists who did not agree or went against government authorised art exhibitions. The style of art was often criticised by leading art galleries and the even some of the public.
Impressionist painting was painting what the real world is through the artist's own eyes by capturing everyday life and the sensory effect of the setting. Monet wanted to and found it interesting to paint outside in the open air and to capture the natural setting.
2.
E. We are able to see people on small boats who are probably fishing. We are also able to see in the background long tall buildings exhaling what looks like smoke. This is most probably a factory.
L. The orange - red tint of the sun indicates that it is early in the morning, hence the name ‘Sunrise.’ The red - orange tint also indicates that the sun is being seen behind a thick but translucent material which could be clouds, smoke or fog. The sun’s reflection is also seen on the water.
B. We are able to see a clear example of brushwork on the water ripples close to the bottom of the painting. It shows that Monet had used short, quick brush strokes with a small brush.
O. The painting is set in a harbour.
W. It may be the smoke but the weather does look pretty foggy.
3. Perception: The ability to use one’s 5 senses to visualise something.
I think that impressionism does look more like our real life visual expressions. Impressionism painting literally is the painting or capturing everyday life using senses to see what life is actually like through someone's eyes or through everybody’s eyes. The use of careful and elaborate brushstrokes gives a sense to what the texture of certain object is its can also, if we put our mind to it, what it may even smell like.
